Frequently asked questions
How many URLs can one sitemap hold?
A single sitemap file is limited to 50,000 URLs and 50 MB uncompressed. Beyond that, split the URLs across several files and list them in a sitemap index.
Do priority and changefreq still matter?
Google has said it largely ignores both and relies on its own crawl signals. They are still valid parts of the protocol and other crawlers may read them, so including them does no harm.
Should I list URLs that redirect?
No. A sitemap should contain canonical, indexable, 200-status URLs only. Redirects and noindex pages waste crawl budget and can be reported as errors.
